Transportation Information and Change in Transportation Instructions

Changes in Transportation

If your BMS student is riding home with another student on their bus or as a car rider the BMS front office needs to be notified in writing.  Please either send a note in with your student or email bmsoffice@mcps.org with the subject line Transportation Change.  Please include who your student will be riding home with as well as letting us know if they will be a bus or car rider.  If they are riding the bus please provide the bus number and address.  All notes are signed by a member of the BMS front office and the students are instructed to give these notes to the bus driver or have them available to show BMS staff at the car rider line.

BMS Transportation Information  2024-25

Students who would like to eat breakfast should go directly to the serving line area and eat breakfast in the cafeteria upon arrival to BMS.  In addition, band students should drop off their instrument upon arrival, as well.

Buses

Bus riders will enter through door #19 at the back of the building near the bus loop..  The bus loop is located directly behind the BMS building.  At the end of the day, bus riders will be directed by their 8th period teacher about procedures for dismissal.

Bikers

Students who ride their bike to school have multiple options of places to secure their bike.  Location #1 is the primary set of bike racks adjacent to the bike path between BMS and KES.  Students should enter the building at the community entrance (door #5) and report to their designated area based on their grade level.

Location #2 is located adjacent to the bus loop near our tolerance wall and serves as an overflow bike rack location. Students who park their bike here should enter through door #19 near the bus loop and report to their designated area based on their grade level.

Location #3 is a second overflow bike rack located to the right of the community entrance.  Students should enter the building at the community entrance (door #5) and report to their designated area based on their grade level.

Location #4 is a third overflow bike rack located in the front of the school building to the right of the main entrance.  Students who park their bike here should enter the building at the community entrance (door #5) and report to their designated area based on their grade level.

When leaving, the students will exit out the door that they entered to retrieve their bike to travel home.

Walkers

Walkers should enter and exit at the community entrance (door #5).  Students using the walkway to Kipps Elementary should not interact with Kipps students, staff or equipment.

Car Riders

Arrival

All traffic is a one way flow.  Drivers should enter the main front entrance to the school parking lot and proceed straight ahead and then left towards the community entrance.  Cars should enter a travel lane between cones and the sidewalk.  As you travel towards the community entrance, there are signs to indicate the proper zone for drop off.  We would like to have approximately 7-8 cars drop off students at the same time.  Your student may exit the vehicle once your car is in the drop off zone.  Please arrive between 7:35-7:55 AM to allow proper time for this process.  Please do not drop off your student any earlier than 7:35 AM.  We are asking all families to exhibit extra patience because we will have a greater number of cars on Prices Fork Road this school year.

Departure

Drivers have two options for picking up their child at school departure.

Option #1 The safest option is to enter the main front entrance to the school parking lot and proceed straight ahead and then left towards the community entrance.  Cars should enter a travel lane between cones and the sidewalk.  As you drive towards the community entrance, there are signs to indicate the proper zone for pick up.  Your student may load and enter the vehicle anywhere between the front of the car rider line at the community entrance to the main entrance of BMS at the same time.

Option #2 The second option is to enter the main front entrance to the school parking lot and proceed straight ahead and then turn left in the middle travel lane in order to park in one of the parking spaces.  The parent may walk over and assist their child in safely crossing in front of the car rider line to get to their vehicle.   If the driver would like to remain in their vehicle, the student MUST be assisted by the BMS staff member to safely cross at our crossing zone.  The crossing zone is located at the front of the car rider line.  Students must remain alert as they walk to their parked car.

Traffic in the parking lot has a one way flow.  Cars exiting the parking spaces will travel in the same direction as the car rider line and merge into one lane at the end of the community entrance.  Cars should come to a complete stop at a stop sign before turning left to travel back towards the main entrance.  There will be a second stop sign before turning right to exit the parking lot onto Prices Fork Road.

PLEASE note that cars must turn right onto Prices Fork Road during drop off and pickup times.

Car Riders with BHS siblings

Arrival

BMS students may walk from the BHS student parking lot along the sidewalk adjacent to the athletic stadium. A BMS teacher will  assist students with the transition from BHS to BMS during the mornings.

Departure

BMS students are NOT allowed to walk to the BHS parking lot during the departure times.

There are two options to connect a BMS student with a BHS sibling driver at school departure:

Option #1  BHS drivers should travel Bruin Lane and turn right onto Prices Fork Road before turning right into the main front entrance to the BMS parking lot.   BHS drivers should proceed straight ahead and follow the car rider line in order to pick up their sibling/siblings.

Option#2  BMS students may ride a 1st load shuttle bus from BMS to BHS and meet their BHS sibling at a designated place near the BHS student parking lot.  If this option is used a signed parent note needs to be approved by the BMS front office.

Drop off/Pick up for parents with BHS and BMS students

Arrival

Option #1   BMS students may walk from the BHS car rider line along the sidewalk adjacent to the athletic stadium. A BMS teacher will  assist students with the transition from BHS to BMS during the mornings.

Option #2    A parent may drop off their BHS student first and then travel Bruin Lane and turn right onto Prices Fork Road before turning right into the main front entrance to the BMS parking lot.

Departure

Option #1   BMS students may ride a 1st load shuttle bus from BMS to BHS and meet their parents and BHS sibling at the BHS car rider line.  If this option is selected, please send a note to school with your child.  Shuttle bus notes must be approved and signed by the BMS front office.

Option #2  A parent may pick up their BHS student first and then travel Bruin Lane and turn right onto Prices Fork Road before turning right into the main front entrance to the BMS parking lot to pick up their BMS student.
